A Punahou School graduate, Dr. Lyla Berg received her Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Her Masters of Education Degrees are in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Hawai`i-Manoa and Educational Administration from the American University in Washington, D.C. She earned her Ph.D. in Education from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Berg served for over 15 years with the State of Hawai`i Department of Education as a classroom teacher, student activities coordinator, vice-principal, and middle school principal. She then become an instructor of pre-service teachers in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction in the College of Education at the University of Hawai`i-Manoa. Prior to her election to the State House in 2004, Dr. Berg conducted workforce development training through her company, Lyla Berg & Associates, at Kapiolani Community College, in the visitor industry, and in the private sector.

During the Legislative Interim, Dr. Berg volunteers with the international organization Teachers Without Borders. She has assisted rural school principals with leadership development training in South Africa and China. Representative Berg is the Vice-Chair of the Hawai`i State House Education Committee and sits on the Agriculture; Economic Revitalization, Business, & Military Affairs; Higher Education; and Tourism, Culture & International Affairs Committees.
